Somali Defence Minister Meets Chinese Counterpart in Landmark Visit to Beijing

BEIJING – Somalia’s Minister of Defence, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, held a bilateral meeting with China’s Minister of National Defense, Admiral Dong Jun, in Beijing on the sidelines of the Xiangshan Forum – marking the first high-level defence talks between the two nations in nearly four decades.

 

The meeting signals a renewed chapter in the strategic relationship between Somalia and China, as both sides expressed a strong commitment to deepening defence and security cooperation.

Minister Fiqi highlighted Somalia’s recent security gains, noting that the Somali National Army had reclaimed significant territory from extremist groups and made progress in stabilizing newly liberated areas.

He underscored the importance of continued international support for the Somali government’s efforts to rebuild its national defence institutions.

Admiral Dong Jun welcomed Somalia’s progress, describing it as “a step toward hope and stability.” He reiterated China’s support for Somalia’s reconstruction and emphasized the role of strong bilateral ties in promoting regional peace.

Both ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation in key areas, including regional stability, counter-terrorism, support for the AU-led AUSSOM mission, and capacity building for the Somali National Army.

The meeting is widely viewed as a milestone in Somalia-China relations, reflecting mutual interest in bolstering defence ties amid evolving regional and global security dynamics.
