NEW YORK — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh and the country’s delegation to the United Nations participated in a high-level international conference in New York focused on the recognition of Palestinian statehood and the protection of Palestinian historic rights.
The gathering, attended by leaders and envoys from numerous countries and UN agencies, emphasized support for an independent Palestinian state and reaffirmed the rights of Palestinians who have long endured conflict and occupation.
In his keynote speech, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reiterated Somalia’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people and government, highlighting Somalia as one of the earliest countries to officially recognize Palestinian statehood.
He underscored Somalia’s ongoing commitment to peace efforts and the pursuit of a lasting resolution in the Middle East.
President Hassan called on the international community to strengthen its backing for Palestinian authorities and citizens, promoting stability and peace in the region while respecting international law and the inalienable rights of Palestinians to their land.
Somalia’s UN delegation also stressed the country’s dedication to fostering peace and development in conflict-affected regions, and supporting governments and peoples confronting political pressure and humanitarian challenges.
The conference included discussions on plans and resolutions aimed at bolstering recognition of Palestinian statehood and safeguarding the human and political rights of Palestinians.
Delegates deliberated on ways international actors can work collectively to end violence and abuses against the Palestinian population.
