Geneva, Switzerland – A delegation led by Somalia’s State Minister for Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Mr. Saadaad Mohamed Nur, is participating in the 76th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Somali delegation also includes the Chairman of the National Commission for Refugees and IDPs, Mr. Ahmed Hussein Elmi, along with senior officials from the Commission.
The annual meeting serves as a global platform to assess the state of refugees worldwide, and to mobilize financial pledges and international support to meet the growing needs of displaced and vulnerable populations.
The session was officially opened with remarks from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Filippo Grandi, who underscored the deteriorating conditions facing refugees globally and the sharp decline in humanitarian funding.
During the week-long meeting, Minister Saadaad and Chairman Ahmed are expected to hold bilateral discussions with key government officials and representatives of international agencies, with a focus on finding durable solutions for refugees residing in and originating from Somalia.
The Federal Government of Somalia has made notable strides in facilitating the voluntary return of its nationals who had faced hardship in foreign countries. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to ensure long-term solutions for both refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) within Somalia.
The 76th UNHCR Executive Committee session brings together representatives from member states, humanitarian organizations, and UN bodies to address the world’s most pressing displacement crises.
