Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia on Thursday welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas during talks in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, hailing it as a step towards ending the ongoing conflict and easing humanitarian suffering in the region.

The agreement includes provisions for a ceasefire, the delivery of humanitarian aid, the release of prisoners and detainees, and the resumption of political negotiations under international supervision.

In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed hope that the deal would pave the way for “a just and comprehensive peace” that ends the suffering of the Palestinian people and promotes regional stability.

“Somalia reaffirms its unwavering support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people — most importantly, their right to establish an independent and sovereign state,” the ministry said.

The government said its stance reflects Somalia’s commitment to international legitimacy and the principles of dignity, justice, and peaceful coexistence.

Somalia also voiced full support for all initiatives aimed at upholding human dignity, reinforcing respect for international law, and achieving a lasting resolution to the Palestinian cause.

The two-year war has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians and drawn in regional actors including Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon. The conflict has also strained US-Israeli ties, with reports suggesting former President Donald Trump urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a settlement.

Celebrations were reported in parts of both Israel and the Palestinian territories following the announcement of the deal, seen as the most significant breakthrough since the war began.
