MOGADISHU, Oct 12, 2025 — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday extended heartfelt congratulations to the Somali people on the occasion of National Flag Day, marking the historic adoption of the country’s flag.
In a statement, President Mohamud highlighted the significance of October 12 as a symbol of Somalia’s independence, unity, and sovereignty.
He recalled that the flag was first designed 71 years ago by the late hero Mohamed Awale Liban, representing the nation’s enduring spirit and the long struggle for freedom.
“Today is a day of great importance for all Somalis. It commemorates the creation of our flag, which embodies our national identity, independence, unity, and the resilience of the Somali people who have fought tirelessly for their freedom and self-determination,” the president said.
He called on all citizens to unite in strengthening the nation’s governance, safeguarding the country’s interests, and protecting the legacy inherited from their forefathers to ensure a brighter future for coming generations.
National Flag Day is annually observed on October 12 and serves as a poignant reminder of Somalia’s journey towards sovereignty and the enduring pride of its people.
