Doha – Somalia’s Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights, Ambassador Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, paid an official visit Tuesday to the Family Court of Qatar, as part of efforts to strengthen judicial cooperation and explore best practices in handling family-related legal matters.
The Somali delegation, led by Minister Al-Makhzoumi, was warmly received by Dr. Ghanem bin Thamer Al-Mutref Al-Humaidi, a senior member of Qatar’s Supreme Judiciary Council. During the visit, the delegation was given a comprehensive overview of the court’s structure, mandate, and operations.
The minister held a series of high-level meetings with various departments within the Family Court, where officials outlined the key challenges they encounter in the administration of family justice, and the mechanisms in place to address them, including mediation and alternative dispute resolution.
Speaking during the visit, Minister Al-Makhzoumi shared insights into the pressing issues facing Somalia’s family justice system, including the absence of a specialized family court. She emphasized the need for Somalia to establish such an institution to address the growing complexity of family-related legal cases.
“Our two nations share deep cultural and religious ties,” said Al-Makhzoumi, “and Somalia is eager to learn from Qatar’s advanced legal frameworks, particularly in areas concerning family welfare and rights.”
The Somali minister praised the warm reception extended by Qatari officials and expressed optimism that the visit would pave the way for future collaboration in legal reforms, capacity building, and the promotion of human rights.
The visit concluded with a tour of the court’s hearing rooms and family mediation units, where the delegation observed the procedures used to facilitate reconciliation and protect the rights of all parties involved.
