NAIROBI, Kenya – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the state funeral of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, joining regional leaders and foreign dignitaries in Nairobi to honour the late veteran politician and African statesman.
The solemn ceremony was held at Nyayo Stadium, where thousands gathered to pay their final respects to Odinga, who passed away on October 15 at the age of 80. He was widely regarded as a towering figure in Kenyan politics and a key advocate for democracy, social justice, and Pan-African ideals.
President Mohamud’s presence underscores the strong diplomatic ties between Somalia and Kenya, as well as Odinga’s far-reaching influence across the continent.
In a statement following Odinga’s death, the Somali leader described him as “a towering statesman whose legacy will endure,” praising his lifelong dedication to public service and the pursuit of democratic governance.
Odinga, who first rose to political prominence in the late 20th century, leaves behind a complex but respected legacy after decades of activism, leadership, and reform efforts in Kenya and beyond.
Thursday’s funeral was part of a series of national events commemorating the life and contributions of the former opposition leader, who was accorded full state honours.
