MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali National Army commandos from the Gorgor unit carried out operations on Sunday targeting al-Shabaab militants in several areas of the Lower Shabelle region, officials said.

The operations took place near the villages of Maracade, Garas Gawaan, and Galka Saalimow. Military officials described the mission as a “clearing operation” aimed at flushing out militants hiding in the area.

Troops conducted house-to-house searches, focusing on suspected hideouts and locations believed to pose a threat to civilians living in the region. Security checks were also carried out on vehicles and individuals during the sweep.

According to a brief statement from the Federal Government, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and stability in the region.

Commanders leading the mission said the goal was to eliminate al-Shabaab presence in the area and secure main roads used by local residents.

Officials added that similar operations would continue across parts of Lower Shabelle to ensure long-term peace and security for communities in the region.
