GENEVA – Somalia’s Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, Abdullahi Omar Abshirow, is attending the opening of the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, leading a delegation from Somalia’s bicameral Federal Parliament.

The global parliamentary summit, held in the Swiss city, brings together lawmakers from across the world to discuss key issues under the theme of safeguarding human rights and supporting humanitarian efforts during global crises.

Throughout the week-long assembly, delegates will exchange views and policy recommendations on how parliaments can respond more effectively to international humanitarian and human rights challenges.

Deputy Speaker Abshirow is scheduled to deliver a keynote address highlighting Somalia’s national situation, including recent security gains, progress in the fight against terrorism, and the government’s ongoing commitment to protecting human rights — all in line with the theme of this year’s gathering.

The Somali delegation is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other parliamentary leaders to strengthen diplomatic ties and boost international support for Somalia’s peacebuilding and development efforts.
