NAIROBI, Kenya — Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali (Hoosh), attended a high-level IGAD ministerial meeting in Nairobi to discuss the implementation of the Nairobi Declaration on Refugee Affairs.
Speaking at the forum, Minister Ali highlighted Somalia’s ongoing challenges, including refugee protection, internally displaced persons, returnees, humanitarian crises, climate change, and recurrent droughts.
“Despite the challenges, Somalia remains fully committed to implementing the principles and objectives of the Nairobi Declaration. In recent years, we have worked to translate these commitments into practical solutions that improve the lives of refugees, IDPs, returnees, and local communities,” the minister said.
He also noted legal reforms undertaken by Somalia to align with regional and international standards, including the Refugee and Asylum Seekers Act approved in September 2023 and the recently passed Internal Displacement (IDP) Bill.
Minister Ali called on IGAD member states to collaborate on regional security and coordinate efforts to strengthen infrastructure and services that support sustainable development and humanitarian assistance.
