NAIROBI – Kenyan police have launched an operation targeting Somali youths in Nairobi who have in recent days increasingly attempted to film dangerous online “challenge” videos on the capital’s busy roads, officials said on Saturday.
The operation follows a rise in accidents and disturbing incidents in which several youths have died or been injured while recording videos intended for social media platforms, according to police sources.
Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Abdulle, had earlier warned of the growing trend, expressing concern for the safety of Somali youths living in Nairobi. He urged the Kenyan government and parents to intervene to prevent the adoption of hazardous street challenges.
Kenyan police say the crackdown is part of efforts to curb the risks posed by dangerous stunts and to safeguard road users across the city.
Security officials said the operation will include increased patrols, awareness campaigns and closer monitoring, as authorities encourage young people to avoid risky behaviour that could lead to fatalities or serious injury.
