BRUSSELS — The European Union reaffirmed the importance of respecting Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
In a statement, the EU said adherence to Somalia’s constitution, as well as the charters of the African Union and the United Nations, is “key for the peace and stability of the entire Horn of Africa region.”
The bloc also encouraged “meaningful dialogue” between Somaliland and the Federal Government of Somalia to resolve long-standing differences.
The African Union echoed the EU’s position, rejecting any unilateral recognition of Somaliland and reiterating its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity.
AU officials warned that actions undermining Somalia’s sovereignty could set a dangerous precedent for regional stability.
Several countries, including Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Iran, also condemned Israel’s move. Each emphasized the need to respect Somalia’s borders and maintain peace in the Horn of Africa.
Turkey reiterated its longstanding support for Somalia’s unity and stability, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia stressed that unilateral recognition of breakaway regions violates international law.
Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Iran called on the international community to reject the recognition and urged dialogue to resolve disputes between Somaliland and the Somali federal government.
