JOWHAR, Somalia — The Al-Shabaab militant group launched a pre-dawn attack on Friday in Wargaadhi area of Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region, targeting a military base housing Danab special forces, security officials said.

The assault began with explosions before a brief exchange of gunfire, according to officers from the elite Danab commandos, specifically the 164th unit stationed at the base.

“The attack was repelled successfully and the militants failed to achieve their objective,” Danab officials said, adding that security in the area had since returned to calm. No official details on casualties were immediately available.

Al-Shabaab, which has been fighting the Somali government for more than a decade, seized the nearby town of Adan Yabaal in 2024 along with other areas in the region, a move that has enabled the group to plan and carry out attacks across central Somalia.

The SNA forces said operations were under way in areas surrounding Wargaadhi to prevent further attacks.
