MOGADISHU — Somalia’s representatives have been cleared to take their seats in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) after the East African Court of Appeal on Monday overturned previous rulings that had blocked their participation.
The decision ends a long-running dispute over the nomination process and paves the way for Mogadishu’s full involvement in the regional legislature.
Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania and the East African Community, Ilyas Ali Hassan, welcomed the ruling, calling it a victory for the rule of law and a significant step toward deeper regional integration. He noted that it comes amid broader Somali efforts to strengthen its role within the East African Community (EAC).
The court’s ruling allows Somalia to fully engage in EALA’s legislative work, giving the country a greater voice in shaping regional policies and cooperation initiatives.
