MOGADISHU — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said on Saturday it had arrested five suspected members of the Al-Shabaab militant group in a joint operation carried out with the support of local residents.

In a statement, NISA said the suspects were part of a terrorist network planning attacks that posed a serious threat to national security, particularly in the capital Mogadishu.

The agency said it had been closely monitoring the group’s movements and plans, adding that the suspects had attempted to enter Mogadishu covertly to carry out attacks targeting the city’s security and stability.

During the operation, NISA said its forces also seized explosives, weapons and vehicles that were intended for use in the planned attacks.

The detained suspects will be handed over to judicial authorities to face prosecution in accordance with Somali law, the statement said.

NISA thanked Somali citizens for their cooperation and continued support, saying public collaboration remains vital to efforts to combat militancy and maintain national security.

Al-Shabaab, linked to al-Qaida, has waged an insurgency against Somalia’s federal government for more than a decade, frequently carrying out bombings and assassinations in Mogadishu and other parts of the country.
