MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday announced an amnesty offer to members of Al-Shabaab, urging them to defect and take advantage of government-backed rehabilitation programmes.
The appeal came in a televised address marking the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, during which the president extended congratulations to the Somali people and Muslims worldwide.
“Young people within Al-Shabaab, I say to you: come out. Your country and your people need you,” Hassan Sheikh said. “The government has offered you amnesty and rehabilitation.”
He called on Somalis to strengthen solidarity and mutual support during Ramadan, particularly for communities affected by ongoing drought conditions in parts of the country.
The president also paid tribute to the Somali National Army and other security forces, praising their sacrifices in defending the country, maintaining security and stabilising areas recaptured from the militants.
Hassan Sheikh said the government would continue military operations against Al-Shabaab but would also prioritise efforts to reintegrate former fighters who renounce violence, enabling them to contribute to the country’s reconstruction and development.
Somalia has stepped up its offensive against the Al-Qaeda-linked group in recent years, combining military pressure with reconciliation initiatives aimed at encouraging defections.
