Kebbi State – At least 30 people have been killed in coordinated attacks by Lakurawa militias on several villages in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, police said.

Police spokesman, Bashir Usman, confirmed that seven villages were destroyed in the attacks, saying the attack was well-planned.

Reports from Anadolu Agency indicate that the armed groups moved from village to village, deliberately targeting civilians. Mamunu village recorded the highest number of casualties at 16, while five youths were killed in Awashaka and three others died in Masama. Other villages attacked include Gorin Dena, Kamzo, Dan Mai Rago and Tungar Bature.

Witnesses said the attack was sudden and intense. Many residents fled to the forest for safety. “It was sudden. They opened fire indiscriminately and burned down houses,” one resident told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity.

The Lakurawa group is an armed group operating in northwestern Nigeria, and is believed to have links to the Islamic State (IS) group and terrorist networks in Mali and Niger, as well as Nigeria’s Sokoto and Kebbi states.

The latest attack comes amid an escalating security crisis in northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups are exploiting their fragile borders to target civilians, loot livestock and undermine government power.
