Somalia talks with opposition face possible collapse as rival meetings intensify

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Talks between the Federal Government of Somalia and opposition groups are reportedly edging toward failure, as the Somali Future Council holds an emergency meeting inside the heavily fortified Halane Camp in Mogadishu, sources said.

The closed-door meeting in Mogadishu brought together key opposition figures, including several former national leaders, as well as officials from the semi-autonomous states of Puntland and Jubaland.

The gathering comes shortly after the federal government convened a broader political conference, whose opening session ended without tangible results. While the dialogue framework remains formally in place, separate consultations involving opposition leaders and some regional administrations have increased in recent days.

Participants in the parallel meetings are focusing on how to address contentious issues still on the table, including proposed constitutional amendments and disagreements over the type and model of elections Somalia should adopt.

The growing political rift unfolds at a critical transitional moment for the Horn of Africa nation, as stakeholders attempt to reach consensus on the country’s political future and electoral system.
