Addis Ababa — The chairperson of the African Union, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, voiced strong concern on Friday over reported joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on targets inside Iran, warning the action risks further inflaming tensions in the Middle East and threatening global peace.
In a statement, Youssouf called for “immediate restraint, de-escalation and sustained dialogue,” urging all parties to adhere to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security.
He warned that an escalation in hostilities could trigger wider global instability, disrupt energy markets, and worsen food insecurity and economic pressures, particularly across Africa, which is already grappling with multiple economic and security challenges.
The AU chief also appealed to all concerned parties to prioritise diplomatic solutions, including ongoing international mediation efforts facilitated by the Oman, to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
Youssouf reiterated that lasting peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, stressing that military means alone cannot deliver a sustainable resolution.
