MOGADISHU – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Wednesday congratulated Somalis at home and abroad on the 66th anniversary of July 1, marking the union of the country’s northern and southern regions and the founding of the Somali Republic.
In a statement, Hamza described July 1 as a symbol of Somalia’s unity, independence and statehood, saying the country’s freedom was achieved through the sacrifices and struggle of Somali national heroes who fought for independence and the dignity of the nation.
The prime minister said that while Somalia was celebrating 66 years of nationhood, the country continued to face challenges, including the threat posed by militant groups and attempts to undermine national unity.
He called on Somalis to support efforts aimed at strengthening peace, preserving unity and advancing national reconstruction in order to safeguard the aspirations and legacy of those who secured the country’s independence.
Hamza concluded by praying for lasting peace, unity, prosperity and development for Somalia, and wished the Somali people continued solidarity in achieving their national goals.
“Happy July 1. Victory and Somali independence,” he said.
