MOGADISHU – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, widely known as Farmaajo, on Wednesday congratulated Somalis worldwide on the 66th anniversary of July 1, marking the union of the country’s northern and southern regions and the founding of the Somali Republic.

In a statement, Farmaajo described the historic anniversary as a symbol of Somalia’s aspirations for independence, unity and national solidarity, saying it reflected the lessons of freedom achieved through sacrifice, patriotism and a shared national vision.

He said the commemoration comes at a time when Somalia is facing political and security challenges, as well as other circumstances that could threaten national unity and the country’s statehood.

The former president stressed the importance of strengthening political dialogue, safeguarding the agreed constitution and placing the national interest above individual or political interests.

Farmaajo also called on Somalis to preserve national unity and work together to build a peaceful, stable and prosperous Somalia, saying such efforts would help fulfill the aspirations of the independence generation.
