MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has launched the first phase of emergency food distributions, providing essential supplies to vulnerable families across central and southern Somalia.

The first distributions took place in Masagawa, Eldher of Galgadud region and Elasha Biyaha near Mogadishu, where families received emergency food assistance.

Each family received a 56-kilogram food package containing rice, flour, sugar and cooking oil to help vulnerable households.

Beneficiaries queued at distribution centers as SoDMA officials, local authorities and community leaders supervised the exercise, ensuring the food reached families most in need.

“This food means everything to my family,” said Asha Mohamed, an elderly woman in Elasha Biyaha. “We can now feed our children for the coming weeks.”

Another recipient welcomed the assistance, saying the supplies would ease hardship while many families continue struggling with rising food insecurity.

“We thank SoDMA for standing with us during this difficult time,” he said. “We hope more support reaches communities still facing severe hardship.”

SoDMA Relief Department Director Sahra Ali Yusuf said the distributions are part of the agency’s efforts to support vulnerable communities.

She said the agency will continue working with local administrations and humanitarian partners to expand emergency assistance and reach more families across Somalia.

Somalia continues facing humanitarian pressures from conflict, climate shocks and displacement, leaving millions in need of assistance.
