MOGADISHU — Somalia’s federal government and opposition groups have held two days of talks in Mogadishu aimed at resolving disputes over the country’s electoral process.

Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, who led the government delegation, said the discussions focused on reaching an inclusive agreement on the framework for upcoming elections.

“The government remains committed to continuing dialogue and achieving a consensus through consultation that will form the basis of a credible, inclusive electoral process,” Jama said in a statement.

The talks are part of broader efforts to ease political tensions and build consensus among Somalia’s rival political actors after months of disagreement over the country’s electoral model.

No agreement was announced following the latest round of discussions, but both sides agreed to continue negotiations in an effort to reach a political settlement on the electoral process and the country’s broader political transition.

The meetings come as Somalia seeks to avoid renewed political instability ahead of planned elections, with longstanding disagreements persisting between the federal government and opposition leaders over the electoral framework.
