ADDIS ABABA – The Peace and Security Council of the African Union has approved the creation of a new mission in Somalia, named the “African Union Mission to Support and Stabilize Somalia.”
In a statement released at the conclusion of its meeting, the Council emphasized the necessity for a thorough assessment of the impact and implications of the third phase of the withdrawal of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to avoid any security vacuum during the transition to the new mission.
The Peace and Security Council commended the enhancement of the partnership between the African Union, the Federal Government of Somalia, and key international partners. This collaboration aims to facilitate the efficient and effective implementation of the new mission’s mandate.
The Council also praised the commitment and tireless efforts of the United Nations and all international partners towards establishing peace and stability in Somalia.
Additionally, the Peace and Security Council underscored the urgent need to increase support provided to the Somali government in mobilizing resources to achieve priorities related to stability and state-building.
There is also a need to ensure a smooth and orderly transfer of security responsibilities to Somali security forces.
