MOGADISHU, Somalia – Armed Fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab attacked a military base on the outskirts of Mogadishu, the Somali capital on Saturday morning.
The sources say attackers stormed the camp located around Busley village, south of the capital in a dawn raid that left several soldiers, including senior officer Liban Golcad dead.
Heavy gunfire was exchanged during the multi-pronged strike on an army camp on the southern side of Mogadishu, a military official said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack and said it had overrun the military base for NISA and police trained in Uganda. However, SMN could independently verify the claim.
The group has stepped up attacks since Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who was elected for a second term in May 2022, declared an “all-out war” on Al-Shabaab.
Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for decades, with the main threats emanating from Al-Shabaab which merged with Al-Qaeda in 2012. The group poses threat to Horn of Africa.
