BAL’AD [SMN] – Al-Shabaab militants have attacked a Somali military base on the outskirts of Bal’ad district in the Middle Shabelle region on Tuesday morning.
The attack was followed by heavy fighting and took place in Qalimow area of the town.
Some locals told us that the fighting involved the use of various weapons and that there were casualties.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had taken control of Qalimow, a key town in the HirShabelle region.
There was no immediate word from Somali government officials on the attack or the ensuing fighting.
The situation is now very tense, and there are still conflicting movements around Balcad town in Middle Shabelle region.
