MOGADISHU, Somalia (SMN) – Al-Shabaab said it wrestled control of a small town in central Somalia from the national army (SNA).
The takeover came after a fierce gunfight between the two sides that broke out after the militants stormed SNA base in Nuru-Nima village outside Runirgood district within Middle Shabelle region.
There was no immediate confirmation of the Al-Shabaab claims that it took over the base, which was housing hundreds of SNA soldiers since last year.
AlShabab steps up attacks as AU forces start their withdrawal from Somalia which could risk the security of the country since the local forces are weak to protect the bases left by ATMIS.
Somalia asked the UN Security council to lift the arms embargo to equip its troops with sophisticated weapons.
