MOGADISHU, Somalia – Planned operations have been carried out by the government forces backed by foreign allies in several areas in the South of Mudug region.
The combined forces have targeted areas where members of the Al-Shabaab group were located, including Qay’ad and Shabeellow, according to the local authorities in the region.
“The Somali National Army and local forces, this afternoon executed a planned operation in Qaycad, Mudug, neutralizing Al-Shabaab ring leaders and militants. This operation sends a clear message: Our commitment to peace and security remains unyielding,” said defense ministry.
Major Abdirahman Nor, one of the officers who led the army operation, told the state media by phone that the operation killed a leader of Al-Shabaab and other militants, he headed.
Nor did not reveal the name of the leader who was killed in the assault, but he said that in the next few hours, they would submit the official details to the newsrooms in Somalia.
The operation came days after the government forces vacated the positions they had controlled, mainly Ba’adweyn, Aad, Amara and Shabeellow which were Al-Shabaab bases.
