MOGADISHU [SMN] – The Somali government said 20 Al-Shabaab were killed in operations by SNA forces with the help of foreign forces thought to be from the US.
The Minister of Information, Daud Aweys, confirmed the operation, saying that the allied troops attacked Al-Shabaab base on the outskirts of Baladul Amin area in Lower Shabelle.
During a press conference with Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the AU Special Envoy and head of the African Union force (ATMIS), Aweys said that Al-Shabaab suffered a blow in the raid.
”The Somali government sees this attack as very important to prevent the threat of Al-Shabaab,” said the minister, thanking the foreign forces for the support in the operation.
The minister said that the fighters who were killed in this attack were a great threat to the stability of the Lower Shabelle region, which borders the capital, Mogadishu.
He said that the government is committed to eradicating Al-Shabaab and protecting the Somali people from the threat of the terrorism.
The U.S. Africa Command’s forces train, advise, and assist Danab partner forces to help give them the tools they need to defeat Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda’s branch in East Africa.
