MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Somali Ministry of Defense confirmed that 30 al-Shabaab militants were killed in a joint airstrike and ground operation conducted last night between the villages of Jicibow and Berayabal in the Hiran region.
The operation is part of Somalia’s ongoing efforts to counter the al-Qaeda-linked group, which has been responsible for numerous attacks across the country in recent years.
The Somali military, with the assistance of international partners, continues to target al-Shabaab strongholds in the central and southern regions.
The ministry described the operation as crucial for ensuring the safety and security of local communities in the area.
Al-Shabaab, which has been waging an insurgency since 2006, has often targeted government forces, civilians, and international peacekeepers.
Somali forces are determined to dismantle al-Shabaab’s presence in the region, and operations like these aim to weaken the group’s operational capacity.
Despite significant losses, al-Shabaab remains a powerful threat in parts of Somalia.
