AU Welcomes Somalia-Ethiopia Deal, Highlights Bilateral Milestone in Addis Ababa

MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia and Head of AUSSOM, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, welcomed the joint communiqué issued on January 11, 2025, in Addis Ababa, following discussions between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, according to a press statement released on January 13, 2025.

 

The statement highlights the significance of this milestone in Somalia-Ethiopia bilateral relations, reaffirming commitments made under the Ankara Declaration. It emphasizes the importance of enhancing diplomatic ties, strengthening security cooperation, and promoting economic integration, all of which are seen as crucial for advancing regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

AUSSOM reiterated its commitment to supporting Somalia’s stabilization efforts and regional partnerships, aligning with the aspirations of the Somali people and the African Union’s vision for a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
