Jeddah, Sept 4, 2025 – Bahrain has pledged support to Somalia in the development of key infrastructure projects, including the construction of a new seaport and a modern international airport, Somali officials said Thursday.

The commitment was made during a bilateral meeting between Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, and Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, on the sidelines of the Second Maritime Transport Industry Conference held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The two ministers discussed strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations, with a particular focus on Bahrain’s support for Somalia’s ongoing efforts to modernize critical infrastructure aimed at boosting economic growth and connectivity.

“Somalia is entering a new phase of development, and partnerships like these are vital for enhancing our national infrastructure and integrating with regional and global trade networks,” Minister Nur said following the talks.

According to Somali officials, Bahrain expressed its readiness to provide technical assistance and explore investment opportunities in the construction of a state-of-the-art port and airport, as part of broader cooperation in the sectors of transport, communications, and maritime trade.

The meeting also served to reaffirm diplomatic ties between Somalia and Bahrain, with both sides committing to deeper collaboration in areas that support sustainable development and long-term economic resilience.

The proposed infrastructure projects are expected to play a significant role in facilitating trade, improving logistics, and positioning Somalia as a key maritime gateway in the Horn of Africa.
