MOGADISHU, Somalia — Chinese Ambassador Wang Yu met with Mohamoud Moallim, the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), at the Chinese Embassy in Mogadishu on Monday.

The meeting focused on the dire humanitarian situation in Somalia, with discussions revolving around the need for increased aid and infrastructure support.

Commissioner Moallim expressed gratitude for China’s previous contributions to Somalia’s relief efforts, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the country, including droughts, floods, and the lingering effects of conflict. “The discussions were fruitful, emphasizing the need for sustained international support to address the multifaceted humanitarian crisis we are facing,” Moallim stated.

Ambassador Wang Yu, in response, reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Somalia. “We recognize the resilience of the Somali people and are dedicated to enhancing our aid programs. Our intention is to not only provide immediate relief but also to support infrastructure projects that will fortify Somalia against future disasters,” Wang said.

The meeting comes at a time when Somalia is grappling with multiple crises, including the threat from al-Shabab militants, which complicates humanitarian access and operations.

The discussions also touched on the potential for Chinese investment in infrastructure, which could play a pivotal role in disaster management and economic recovery.

This engagement underscores China’s growing role in African diplomacy, particularly in fragile states like Somalia, where humanitarian aid and infrastructure development are critical for stability and development.

The collaboration between SoDMA and the Chinese Embassy is expected to lead to more coordinated and effective relief efforts, potentially setting a precedent for future international cooperation in disaster management within Somalia.
