ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been elected as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission, securing the seat with 33 votes in a closely contested seventh round of voting at the 38th AU Summit.
Youssouf triumphed over Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Madagascar’s ex-foreign minister Richard Randriamandrato, marking a significant diplomatic victory for Djibouti.
His election underscores the increasing influence of smaller nations within the African Union, traditionally dominated by larger countries.
As Foreign Minister, Youssouf has been pivotal in strengthening Djibouti’s diplomatic ties, mediating regional disputes, and pushing for economic integration across Africa.
His leadership at the AU Commission is expected to focus on regional security, economic development, and institutional reforms.
The race for the AUC Chairpersonship was one of the most competitive in recent history, with candidates from Eastern Africa, the region designated for the position this term, presenting their cases.
The election process involved multiple rounds, highlighting the diverse interests and alliances within the AU’s 55 member nations.
