CAIRO — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi discussed the situation in the Horn of Africa during a Saturday telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, according to the Egyptian presidency.
El-Sisi underscored the intrinsic link between security in the Horn of Africa and Egypt’s national security. He highlighted Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s stability through bilateral cooperation, referencing a defense agreement signed in Cairo in August.
The Egyptian leader also commented on a recent agreement mediated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan between Ethiopia and Somalia, expressing hope that it would contribute to regional security and stability in accordance with international law.
Macron, who recently visited Ethiopia, endorsed Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s initiatives to secure sea access via neighboring countries, emphasizing dialogue and adherence to international law.
Egypt plans to deploy approximately 10,000 troops to Somalia starting in January 2025, under the new African Union mission, to replace Ethiopian forces in the South West, Jubaland, and Hir Shabelle regions.
Ethiopia has raised concerns over Egypt’s military involvement in Somalia, with tensions already high due to disputes over the Nile River. Ethiopia has indicated it will not withdraw its forces from the country, potentially setting the stage for a confrontation with Egypt.
