Ethiopia’s Abiy hosts Israeli president for talks on ties, regional security

ADDIS ABABA — Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday received Isaac Herzog in Addis Ababa for official talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations, his office said.

In a brief statement, the prime minister’s office said the two leaders discussed a range of issues including regional security, economic cooperation, technology, agriculture and investment development.

Both sides expressed commitment to strengthening cooperation and deepening diplomatic ties, according to the statement.

Herzog’s visit comes at a sensitive time for Ethiopia, which in December 2025 recognised Somaliland, a move that triggered political reactions domestically and abroad.

Unconfirmed reports have also suggested that Ethiopia, Israel and United Arab Emirates are exploring a potential alliance linked to security and the management of Red Sea maritime routes.

While no formal agreement has been announced, any such initiative involving the Red Sea is widely seen as having significant implications for regional power balances.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s most strategic trade corridors, linking Africa, Asia and Europe and carrying a substantial share of global commerce.
