If BRICS is to take Ethiopia’s membership seriously, it must consider Ethiopia’s recent actions against its long-term commitment to upholding the coalition’s values. Ethiopia must address its violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity and recommit to the principles of non-interference and mutual respect. Failure to do so risks not only destabilizing the region but also undermining BRICS’ credibility as a global actor promoting peace, equality, and multilateralism.
For Ethiopia, recalibrating its foreign policy to align with BRICS principles is essential. A renewed focus on diplomacy, respect for sovereignty, and regional cooperation would not only strengthen Ethiopia’s case for BRICS membership but also promote stability and peace in the Horn of Africa.
BRICS should carefully assess Ethiopia’s membership in light of its recent actions in Somalia. The bloc’s credibility and commitment to its founding principles must not be compromised by the admission of nations that do not fully align with its vision.
For its part, Ethiopia must realign its actions with the values it seeks to uphold, benefiting both its regional neighbors and the broader international community.
