Fifth Somali Workers’ Union Conference Opens in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Fifth Annual Conference of the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) officially opened in Mogadishu today. Somalia’s Second Deputy Prime Minister, Abdisalaan Abdih Ali (Dhay), inaugurated the event.

 

The conference, attended by 320 delegates from Somalia’s regional states, Banadir Region, and representatives from 12 Somali workers’ unions, will focus on key issues, including protecting workers’ rights, strengthening the country’s democratic processes, and improving job creation opportunities.

The event was also graced by the participation of the Ministers of Constitutional Affairs and Labor. Discussions during the conference will address the promotion of democracy, economic growth, and the creation of a more inclusive society based on fairness and social justice.

Deputy Prime Minister Abdisalaan Ali expressed his satisfaction with the Somali president’s recent signing of the revised Labor Law, calling it a significant victory for Somali workers.

He also emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the Decent Work Country Programme, aiming to boost job opportunities and enhance economic development in the country.
