MOGADISHU, Somalia – A powerful car bomb exploded outside a café in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, on Sunday, killing at least five people and injuring 20 others, according to a police spokesman.
The café was crowded with people watching the European soccer final between Spain and England on a screen when the blast occurred. Some of the spectators were injured while trying to escape the scene by jumping over the café’s perimeter wall, while others were hurt in the ensuing stampede.
Pictures posted online showed the café engulfed in flames after the explosion.
Witness Ismail Adan, who was present at the scene, reported that most of the victims were in the street at the time of the explosion. The perpetrators of the attack have not yet been identified.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Somalia, a country that has been plagued by conflict and instability for decades.
The Somali government and international partners have been working to combat terrorism and improve security, but attacks like this one serve as a stark reminder of the persistent threats to peace and stability in the region.
