Galmudug and Puntland Leaders Forge Ahead with Strategic Partnership for Peace and Development

GALKAYO, Somalia – Leaders from the Galmudug and Puntland regional states, Ahmed Abdi Kariye and Said Abdullahi Deni respectively, convened at the Presidential Palace in Galkayo on Friday night to deepen their strategic partnership.

 

The high-level meeting, which included senior officials from both regions, aimed to bolster cooperation across critical sectors including security, trade, peacebuilding, and development.

The discussions revolved around the existing cooperation agreement between Galmudug and Puntland, evaluating past successes and identifying areas for enhanced collaboration. A significant focus was placed on crafting a roadmap to expedite peace initiatives in the troubled Mudug region, known for its historical conflicts.

Key outcomes from the meeting included:

1. Enhanced Security and Development Cooperation: Both administrations agreed to intensify efforts in security, peace, trade, economic development, and social integration to foster stability and growth.

2. Regular Ministerial Meetings: A commitment was made to hold quarterly ministerial-level meetings to review and advance the agreed initiatives.

3. Development Projects in Conflict Zones: Plans were outlined to initiate development projects aimed at aiding recovery in conflict-affected areas, and promoting peace through economic stability.

4. Infrastructure Study: A joint study on drainage management in Galkayo was proposed to tackle infrastructure challenges effectively.

The meeting underscores a renewed commitment from both regional states to work collaboratively towards regional stability and development, signaling a positive step towards resolving long-standing issues through cooperation rather than conflict.
