MOGADISHU, Somalia – The leader of the central regional state of Galmudug Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoor-Qoor was flown to Mogadishu after a suicide bombing in the Mudug region.
Speaking to VOA Somali service, Ahmed Abdi Aden, Galmudug state’s security minister confirmed that the president is in good health and will stay in the capital for the next days.
Qoor-Qoor narrowly survived a complex Al-Shabaab attack on a military camp in Las-Ga’amey, southern Mudug region on Friday. The foiled car bomb wounded two lawmakers.
MP Abdisalan Hajji Ahmed and Senator Abdi Hassan Awale aka Qeybdid were slightly wounded in the Al-Shabaab attack while members of presidential guards lost their lives.
The officials have been visiting troops on the frontlines for the past few weeks as part of the efforts led by President Hassan Sheikh to galvanize the offensive aimed at liberating the whole nation from Al-Shabaab.
The federal government launched a large-scale offensive against al-Shabab in the Mudug and Galgaduud regions in the central parts of the country.
The Clan militias also provided support to the forces, which, the government said are on course to finish the first phase of the operation which is in the final stage of its completion.
Though the government offensive has weakened al-Shabaab’s hold on territory, it has not stopped the group’s attacks. Al-Shabaab is carrying deadly raids on Somali and AU military bases.
