GALKAYO, Somalia – A young Somali doctor was shot dead by unknown assailants in the central city of Galkayo late Tuesday, in what authorities suspect is part of ongoing clan-related killings that have plagued the region for years.
Dr. Omar Abdi Daahir, a rising medical professional, was gunned down by armed men who fled the scene before security forces arrived, according to local sources and security officials.
He is the second doctor to be killed in Galkayo this year amid renewed tensions between rival clans. The city, which straddles the administrative boundary between Puntland and Galmudug regional states, has long struggled with cycles of inter-clan violence.
Local authorities say investigations are underway, but no arrests have been made so far.
“We are pursuing leads and will not allow criminals to operate with impunity,” a senior police official said.
The security forces in the Mudug region have launched both awareness campaigns and operations aimed at tracking down those responsible for targeted killings, which often claim the lives of respected community figures.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killing, and the motive has not been officially confirmed. However, residents and analysts point to lingering tribal feuds as a likely cause.
Galkayo remains a flashpoint for violence despite efforts by both Puntland and Galmudug to improve joint security arrangements.
