LUUQ, Somalia — Intense fighting broke out today in Luuq, a town in the Gedo region, between two clan militias, causing significant casualties and widespread damage. Heavy gunfire and explosions have been reported throughout the city, as both sides engage in the ongoing battle using various types of weapons.
The fighting has resulted in both deaths and injuries, with sources indicating that the wounded are in critical condition. Some victims have been evacuated to Luuq’s main hospital, while others are in need of medical care beyond the town’s capacity.
Local residents confirmed hearing continuous gunfire and explosions as the militias clash in populated areas, where civilians are trapped. In several neighborhoods, families have been seen fleeing, trying to escape the crossfire.
Aid convoys have been arriving from surrounding districts, and government forces in the area have reportedly joined the battle, aligning with their respective clan factions.
Imam Abdullahi, a prominent Somali cultural figure, called for an immediate ceasefire, stressing that the conflict is undermining stability and prosperity in the region.
Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam expressed concern over the escalating violence, stating that he had closed a reconciliation conference today at the Aqalka Martida. He urged the warring clans in Luuq to cease hostilities unconditionally.
The violence highlights the worsening situation in the Gedo region, where there is still no clear solution to the long-running clashes between rival clans. The situation in Luuq is expected to worsen until a peaceful resolution is reached.
