DJIBOUTI – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has strongly condemned the recent attack carried out by the Al-Shabaab militant group on the Godka Jilacow detention and investigation center in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.

In an official statement, IGAD praised the swift and courageous response of the Somali security forces, commending their efforts in preventing what could have been a large-scale tragedy.

“The attack reflects a growing sense of desperation within the ranks of Al-Shabaab and underscores the effectiveness of sustained counter-terrorism operations in Somalia,” the regional bloc said in its statement.

The incident came just days after the Somali National Army (SNA) reported major counter-terrorism gains, including the targeted killing of senior Al-Shabaab operatives in precision operations.

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of IGAD, reiterated the bloc’s solidarity with Somalia, stating:

“This attack will not shake Somalia’s resolve or undermine our region’s determination. IGAD stands firmly with the people and Government of Somalia in the fight against terrorism and in pursuit of lasting peace and stability.”

IGAD also renewed its call for strengthened regional and international cooperation to eradicate terrorism and promote sustainable peace and resilience across the Horn of Africa.
