ADDIS ABABA — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has strongly condemned any attempt to recognize Somaliland, reiterating that the Federal Republic of Somalia remains a fully sovereign and independent member state of the regional bloc.
In a statement, IGAD said any unilateral recognition of Somaliland would violate the charters of the United Nations, the African Union, and the IGAD agreement itself.
The bloc urged the international community and stakeholders to respect international law and support dialogue and peaceful processes that strengthen regional stability, cooperation, and peace.
IGAD also reaffirmed its support for the Somali government and people, emphasizing its commitment to inclusive political processes and regional collaboration aimed at achieving lasting peace, stability, and shared prosperity for Somalia and all IGAD member states.
