MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a meeting with Mr. Frantz Celestin, the head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Somalia, we engaged in constructive discussions centered on key areas critical to Somalia’s stability and development.
These discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration in enhancing migration management, border security, and the rule of law, all of which are vital components in achieving lasting prosperity for the nation.
The IOM has been a significant partner in Somalia, working towards the development and implementation of policies and strategies that promote safe and orderly migration. Their efforts in border management and security contribute significantly to the stabilization of the region, ensuring the safe passage of migrants and the protection of their rights.
In our discussions, we emphasized the importance of enhancing the rule of law in Somalia. A strong legal framework is essential for maintaining order and ensuring that the rights of all individuals, including migrants, are protected. The IOM’s support in this area is crucial, as it helps to strengthen the capacity of the Somali authorities to manage migration effectively and to mitigate security threats.
Moreover, the IOM’s commitment to promoting the development and prosperity of Somalia was a key point of discussion. Their efforts in supporting the government in delivering pre- and post-recovery services to enhance trust and rebuild legitimate institutions are instrumental in fostering a conducive environment for economic growth and social development.
The discussions also highlighted the IOM’s focus on advancing the well-being of society and migrants through stronger migration governance and development. This includes improving practices to protect and assist vulnerable migrants, sustainable reintegration of returning Somalis from abroad, and harnessing the development benefits of migration.
In conclusion, our meeting with Mr. Celestin underscored the importance of the IOM’s work in Somalia and the significant role it plays in promoting humane and orderly migration, enhancing border security, and contributing to the rule of law and lasting prosperity.
“We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the IOM and other partners to further these goals,” said the security minister of Somalia.
