MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a diplomatic encounter, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed the United Nations’ Acting Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, on Tuesday.
The meeting, held at the President’s office, was aimed at further enhancing the close partnership between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the United Nations in critical areas, including humanitarian, peace, and security.
James Swan, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in Africa, was re-appointed to the UN mission in Somalia by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. His return to Mogadishu after two years of absence marks a crucial period for Somalia, a country undergoing a stabilization process.
The meeting with President Mohamud comes at a time when Somalia is grappling with a myriad of challenges, including the worst drought in four decades, which has left about 7.8 million Somalis affected and more than 1 million displaced.
The UN, under Swan’s leadership, has been actively involved in supporting the federal and state governments in addressing these severe water shortages and drought conditions, among other humanitarian and development priorities.
Swan’s visit to Somalia is part of a series of high-level UN visits around the country. During his stay, he also met with Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and various civil society representatives. These meetings underscore the UN’s commitment to supporting the federal and state governments in their efforts to advance security, governance, and the rule of law.
The discussions between Swan and President Mohamud were focused on strengthening the partnership between the FGS and the UN in critical areas. This includes enhancing the security transition process, supporting the formation of district councils, and advancing reconciliation within the Jubaland state.
The UN’s role in Somalia is crucial, particularly in the areas of peace, security, and development. The collaboration between the FGS and the UN is expected to play a significant role in Somalia’s journey towards stability and prosperity.
As Somalia continues its path towards peace and development, the international community, led by the UN, remains a steadfast partner.
The meeting between President Mohamud and James Swan is a testament to this partnership and a step forward in the ongoing efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous Somalia.
