KISMAYO, Somalia, Sept 6 – Jubaland’s Intelligence and Darawish paramilitary forces carried out a large-scale joint security operation overnight on the outskirts of Kismayo, the capital of the Lower Juba region, targeting suspected Al-Shabaab militants linked to recent mortar attacks.
According to regional security officials, the operation specifically aimed at dismantling a network believed to be responsible for launching mortars into a new airport near Kismayo, housing a U.S. military outpost where American forces train the elite Danab unit.
“This was a coordinated and targeted operation against terrorist elements threatening the security of Kismayo,” a Jubaland intelligence officer told the local media. “Investigations are ongoing to track down fleeing suspects.”
The operation comes in the wake of a mortar attack on Thursday evening, when Al-Shabaab militants reportedly fired several rounds near the U.S. military base on the city’s outskirts.
While no casualties have been officially confirmed, the incident has heightened security concerns in the area.
Jubaland authorities said further details on the outcome of the operation and additional security measures will be released in an upcoming briefing.
The regional state Security forces affirmed their commitment to intensifying counterterrorism efforts aimed at preventing future attacks and stabilizing the region.
