NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenyan security agencies said Thursday they have foiled a major attack planned in the capital, Nairobi, during the holy month of Ramadan.

A statement posted on the official Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya Twitter account said the plot was orchestrated by the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab, but was disrupted after months of surveillance and intelligence operations.

Authorities said the operation targeted a network operating inside the Dadaab refugee camps, where they seized a cache of weapons and explosives, including more than 600 rounds of ammunition, pistols, hand grenades, explosive materials, and drugs.

Officials added that the materials were intended for targets in Nairobi. The suspects were reportedly planning attacks during Ramadan and were also considering kidnappings of foreigners and vehicle hijackings.

Kenyan security agencies emphasized that Nairobi remains safe, crediting continuous efforts by police and intelligence officers monitoring high-risk groups around the clock.

The government has not provided further details on the number of arrests, and investigations are ongoing.
