BAIDOA, Somalia – The deputy prime minister of Somalia Salah Jama opened Wednesday the country’s humanitarian forum which brings together all FGS-FMS stakeholders.
The representatives from the Government of Somalia and Federal member states, aid agencies, and international partners are discussing the humanitarian situation in Somalia.
The quarterly humanitarian coordination Baidoa forum also focuses on the Nino, drought response, preparedness action, comprehensive coordination, and early warning systems.
The meeting comes as Somalia is currently facing the worst drought in 40 years with over 3.7 million in need of life-saving support, according to the latest reports by the aid groups.
On Monday, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations said that its Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM) Unit is ramping up mitigation measures, including mapping out flood-prone areas ahead of the expected El Niño rains.
According to FAO, its SWALIM has finalized the analysis and mapping of the river breakages along the Juba and Shabelle rivers using very high-resolution satellite imagery.
